Wasgomuwa National Park

Wasgomuwa National Park and adjoining protected areas in east-central Sri Lanka (Flood Plains National Park and Somawathiya Chaitiya Sanctuary) provide habitat along the Mahaweli River (Sri Lanka’s longest) for a rich variety of wildlife both in its forests and in fields cleared for agriculture. These include leopards, a unique subspecies of elephants, sloth bears, water buffalo, macaques, langurs, four deer species (axis or spotted, sambar, barking, mouse), and among birds, peacocks, jungle fowl, and colorful hornbills and barbets.
